| In Switzerland, qualified personnel which either perform or supervise animal experiments must complete at least one day of vocational training per year (according to the TSchV, Art. 59d). |

The veterinary authorities acknowledge this web-based training in two cases:
1.) Vocational training:
According to Swiss legal regulations, staff entrusted with animal experiments must take at least 4 days of courses within 4 years (SR 455.171.2). The courses must emphasize information relevant to their particular field (chapter 4, art. 20- 22).
This also includes knowledge on the 3Rs, e.g. how animal experiments can be reduced to a minimum, for instance by using efficient replacement methods.
The 3R Module can help you gain insight into this way of thinking.
On Jan. 10, 2005, the Swiss Association of Cantonal Veterinarians officially recommended the 3R Module to the authorities for mandatory vocational training. The association suggested for the authorities responsible for the supervision of animal experiments to acknowledge each day of training completed by leaders and performers of experiments after passing a test on 4 different subjects.
2.) Training:
If you have proof of having concluded the necessary training (on Swiss regulations for animal experiment training, chapters 2 and 3; SR 455.171.2) and would like to qualify to lead or perform experiments without completing module 1, you might still need the following:
a) Training on the theory of alternatives to animal experiments (chapter 2, art. 10 respectively chapter 3, art. 16).
Then use the 3R module
If you would like to know what the tests consist of, go to "3R test module info".
If you would like to start the test, click on "Go to test module".
b) Specific knowledge on current Swiss laws
Then use the "law module".
The "law module" will inform you about Swiss legal regulations, which will enable you to lead or perform animal experiments in Switzerland.
This module is under construction and will be available soon..
Advantages of an electronic, web-based test:
i) You can complete your training at times best for you*.
ii) No need to spend time and money for transportation to and from courses.
iii) Costs are kept at a minimum, since no speakers or rent for using a room have to be paid; all costs go towards the maintenance of the web program.
iv) Training is registered, monitored and defined.
*Do you have a laptop with WI-FI or W-LAN? If so, you will be able to work on your training in all Hotspots, at train stations, in lecture halls or even at the pool. Just bear in mind that you may be charged in public areas.
A broadband connection such as ADSL (which is common for most companies, institutes and is gaining more popularity for the single user) will make your training easier. Hotspots often make the web program faster. ISDN is also a possibility to consider, but a telephone connection is usually tedious and raises phone bills. The program is only guaranteed to function when using an "Internet Explorer" browser. |
