To enable themselves to advance the development of alternatives to the Draize test, various laboratories within the pharmaceutical industry and the supplier of an in vitro model, have begun a mutual validation study.
Involved are the companies,Johnson & Johnson Pharmaceutical R&D, Beerse, Belgium (F.van Goethem), Novartis Pharma AG, Basel, Switzerland (F. Straube), Pfizer, Amboise, France (N. Alepee) and SkinEthic Laboratories, Nice, France (B. deWever).
This study serves as an example for a pre-validation, which has not been directly initiated by the ECVAM. In the near future, the in vitro model will be introduced. The basis for this model is an in vitro generated human Cornea epithel. The diagram shows the histological dissection of the model and the human cornea to provide a comparison.
